Sam Lyon AudioVisualINDEPENDENT TECHNICAL ADVICE

Technical advice for video, AV, and connected systems — on your side of the table.

I design production workflows, specify systems, and review quotes for video, audio-visual, smart-home and solar projects. I don't sell equipment or take commissions — so the advice stays yours.

Whether it's a weekly live-streamed gig, a home cinema, a studio build, or a solar-and-battery quote you don't fully trust — you get an independent engineer's read before the money moves.

What I do

Lane 01

Video production & live workflows

End-to-end production design for live events and content pipelines: multicam capture, live-to-disk and streaming paths, audio chains, edit and archive workflow — built to run week after week by the people you have.

Lane 02

AV & smart-home systems

Cinema rooms, multi-room audio, networks, home automation. Requirements, system design, integrator quote review and commissioning punch-lists — without the equipment margin bias.

Lane 03

Solar & battery review

Buyer-side screening of proposals and system choices: what the quotes actually say, what's oversized, what's missing. Detailed design and installation stay with licensed partners I help you choose.

How an engagement runs

Scoping call

20 minutes, free. You describe the project; I tell you which rung fits — or honestly, if this doesn't need me.

L1

Technical triage

90-minute working session plus a written decision memo: options, tradeoffs, a recommendation, and exactly what to do next.

Bid / spec review

Your quotes audited against your requirements: comparison matrix, red flags, and the questions to send back before you sign.

Project advisor

Across the whole project: design reviews, vendor calls, commissioning punch-list. Advisory only — I don't install or manage trades.

Engineering days

Pro-video and AV engineering by the day: workflow design, system architecture, integration specs.

Current work

● Case study 001 — in progress

Weekly live music gig: production workflow, Australia

Designing and standing up a repeatable live-to-disk video production workflow for a weekly music residency — capture path, audio chain, and an operating rhythm a small crew can run every week.

  • Multicam capture + record path (live-to-disk, archival)
  • Audio: from the desk to the edit, synced and clean
  • Weekly operation: setup, run, backup, publish

Write-ups land here as projects finish — that's the deal: every engagement ends with a public artifact.

Every engagement is scoped and agreed up front — it starts with the free scoping call. Advisory only — installation and electrical work always go to licensed trades.

Online video at scaleBuilt Vimeo's accessibility program: player, workflows, compliance, training.
Systems in the wildA working homelab: networking, automation, cameras, storage, solar-adjacent infrastructure — the same problems I advise on, solved at home first.
No equipment margin. No referral commissions. Integrators and installers make money on what they sell; I make money on advice only. When a cheaper or simpler answer is right, I say so.
